Cuomo Statewide Initiative Follows Misuse of Exemption

Is $700 a lot of money to you? Well that is what many homeowners will be losing if they do not re-register for the Basic STAR exemption by December 31, 2013. This is actually a re-blog for those who may have missed it the first time.
The New York Tax Department, in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s initiative to save New York taxpayer’s millions by eliminating inappropriate Basic STAR property tax exemptions, has launched a mandatory statewide Basic STAR registration. The registration deadline is December 31, 2013 and affects homeowners currently receiving the Basic STAR exemption.
The registration is mandatory and impacts Basic Star Exemptions for 2014 and beyond. The Average benefit as a result of Basic Star is $700 annually.
The initiative includes an easy, fast and secure online STAR Registration platform at www.tax.ny.gov. The Tax Department is mailing letters to all 2.6 million Basic STAR recipients. Governor’s Initiative Follows Tax Department Investigation
The Basis STAR provides 2.6 million NY homeowners with savings on their school property tax bills each year, but is only available for an individual’s or family’s primary residence. The Tax Department investigation showed some homeowners were receiving the exemption on more than one property.
As stated by Thomas H. Mattox, New York State Commissioner of Taxation and Finance, “Local Assessors monitor Basic Star in their communities, but do not have the ability to know if an individual is receiving STAR in any of the other 1,000 localities statewide. This is the first registration in the STAR Program’s 15-year history, and it will eliminate inappropriate and fraudulent exemptions.”

Senior Citizens Receiving Enhanced Star not Affected
Senior citizens receiving Enhanced STAR are not impacted by this registration. Seniors must continue to apply annually or participate in the income Verification Program.
